Spriggan Mist and Flutatious plus guests had a Wassail
Wassailing comes in 2 varieties, this was the “Orchard” variety
The orchard-visiting wassail refers to the ancient custom of visiting orchards in cider-producing regions of England, reciting incantations and singing to the trees to promote a good harvest for the coming year.
So, there were 2 bands, a “Mari Lwyd”, an eponymous hobby horse which is made from a horse’s skull mounted on a pole and carried by an individual hidden under a sackcloth, which is part of the wassailing tradition, and a morris dancing troupe
Because this was an Orchard wassail, there was also an apple tree, with a piece of toast on the top branch to feed the birds. This was blessed as part of the wassail ceremony
There was also a troupe of belly dancers that espoused the pagan traditions that were throughout the show, as well as some morris dancers
It was delightful to watch and the music was outstanding, what an eclectic evening!
